I used to get these ulcers in my mouth constantly and they would last for weeks. In fact, about the time one was healing another one would rear its ugly head. It was miserable to eat, drink or even talk. As a teacher, I had to talk through the pain, making me wince. My eyes would water because the ulcers hurt so much. I couldn’t sleep. I was grumpy. What are Mouth Ulcers and Their Cause?
Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) – that’s the medical term for “hurts like H#@!” mouth ulcers or canker sores. These sores are one of the most common oral problems that people suffer from. (Does it make you feel any better knowing that? I didn’t think so!) They are small, painful, slow to heal sores that develop inside the lip and cheek, gums, tongue, and even the palate.
There are many reasons why someone might get RAS:
- stress and lack of sleep
- medications
- hormonal changes

- Baking soda and salt water rinse
- Over the counter topical anesthetic gels and oral rinse
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Prescription medication such as Valacyclovir
There was a study in 2012 where 21 different interventions were assessed in multiple trials to find solutions to decrease duration and frequency of ulcers. Some participants even used more than two treatments at a time. Guess what? “This review found … the evidence of their effectiveness remains inconclusive.”
In other words, nothing worked.
I can vouch for that. I tried everything my doctor and dentist suggested and nothing worked for me either. Nothing seemed to speed the healing process. More importantly, nothing slowed the recurrence of these painful ulcers in the first place. That was my real quest!
